Natalie McDermid grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, as part of a large family. Throughout her childhood, she was mainly interested in sports. However, after getting married to her wife and starting the process to have a family of her own, she felt that there were not a lot of children’s books that reflected how diverse the world we live in is. Natalie decided to write a short children’s story where the main character was in a same-sex relationship so that her child could see its mother represented in a fairy tale.
